Video:

Warming up

1. This video talks about criticism towards Grok, an AI-botfor users of the social media platform Grok. Have you used an AI-bot such as ChatGPT, Copilot, Gemini, etc? If yes, what have you used them for? If no, what do you think most people use them for?

2. There has been a scandal around people using Grok to digitally undress people without their consent. Have you heard the word ‘consent’ before, and what do you think it means? Look it up if you’re not sure.

Questions about the video

Watch the video from 0:00-1:23.

3. Which of the following statements about the scandal around Grok is true?

A: The UK regulator Ofcom criticised the recent changes made to Grok and said the measures did not go far enough.

B. An investigation by regulator UK Ofcom found that the way users were able to use Grok was illegal.

C. The BBC was able to find the commands users used with Grok in private chats.

D. Users will no longer be able to digitally undress images of real people, but only in countries where that’s illegal.

4. Why is Ashley St. Clair being interviewed about this topic?

Now watch the video from 1:23 to 02:17.

5. Fill in the missing words in the statement.

prevent – implemented – revealing – measures – restrictions

In a statement, X said that they had […] technological […] to Grok. They have added […] to the tool, which will […] users from editing images of real people to put them in […] clothing.

6. A new law in the UK will make it illegal to create deep fake sexual images. How is that different from the laws that already existed around deep fakes?

Now watch the video from 2:17 to the end of the video.

7. Why does Professor Clare McGlynn say this should not be ‘game over’ for the scandal around Grok and X?

8. What is the difference between deep fake images made on Grok and those made with other AI tools?

Task

Option 1: The video mentions that it’s notable that many politicians are still active on X. Write down a list of pros and cons (at least one of each) for politicians having an account on X.

Option 2: What are the laws around deep fakes in the Netherlands? Look up whether sharing (sexualised) deep fakes is illegal in the Netherlands, and what the punishment for it is. Then describe a hypothetical (not real) situation where this type of content could be shared, and what the consequences would be.
